regime
regime
is fully naturalized in terms of spelling, but is still pronounced in a French manner. Regime change is a pair of words that chance might throw together at any time (the earliest occurrence found by the OED editors happens to be from 1925), but events at the start of the 21c have brought it forcibly to our attention and have even given it a deep aura of euphemism, since what it means in practice is the violent overthrow of a foreign government by a power who regards that government as hostile. It therefore joins the stock of politically sanitized expressions alongside collateral damage, ethnic cleansing, and others (see euphemism).
